4. Working Practices and Legislation

4.1     Demonstrate good health and safety practice when working on film      productions

Why is health and safety important when working on film productions?

Health and safety is vitally important to ensure that everyone is safe during filming. If a risk assessment isn’t created and adhered to, it increases the chances of people getting hurt. On the set of the hobbit for example there was a explosion that gave two people mild burns but nothing more. This is one example where people could have had worse injuries if a contingency plan wasn’t in place to minimise risks and to ensure there is the necessary assistance if problems arise.

We applied good health and safety practice when making our film because everything the actors in the film, one of them which is me did, they had agreed to beforehand. Dillon for example had agreed to chew jelly in his mouth and spit it out and he was aware of the risk of him possibly choking because it was on our risk assessment. We made sure as well that any thing that could be a hazard on the set when we were filming was at of sight. We handled the equipment properly and accordingly and when we were filming on the streets outside the showroom we made sure we were well away from the road.

The risk assessment is of vital importance because if filled in properly, it should mean that the crew have a contingency plan in place for every possible risk that could occur. Also if you aware of all the potential risks and hazards, this should therefore mean that as a crew you have minimised all of the potential problems. If risks are minimised and plans in place for if things do go wrong, this should ensure filming runs as smoothly as possible. The most important aspect of the risk assessment though, is that it should ensure the safety of the all crew for the entire filming duration. My risk assessment is in my blog to view as I was having difficulty copying it in here.

4.2     Explain why copyright is important in the film industry

Copyright is a legal right that protects the use of your work once your idea has been physically expressed. Copyright sets out a framework of rules around how that work can be used. It sets out what the rights of the owner are as well as the responsibilities of other people who want to use the work. If it is your property you can do whatever you want with it. You can amend it, sell it or rent it. It exists to protect the rights of the person who created it. These rights include controlling when and how their work can be used. It also exists to prevent  others from using someone’s work without permission and gaining profit from it.

Some of the work covered by copyright is:

  • Literary works
  • Dramatic pieces and music
  • Drawings, diagrams and photographs
  • A layout of  publication
  • Films, videos and broadcasts

If we as a group used existing copyrighted property without permission we could end up being sued by the owner of the property. This could lead to criminal charges and of course damaged reputations. You can ensure you don’t infringe copyright law by having a thorough understanding of the law and by trying to be as original and creative as possible. Copyright law and other IP regulation has affected our film production because we won’t we able to use anything in or film that is owned by someone else without permission . This includes music we might have included in our piece and even photos if they haven’t been took by us and we haven’t had permission to use them.

In the opening, Dillon’s character Jean Pierre, receives a photo of John ‘the target’ from his Boss. We had to orchestrate when to send these texts so that the image and then the text appeared when the phone was in shot. This took a few attempts.

  1. Hi Josh,
Please could you complete the health and safety questions and consider, retrospectively, the effectiveness of your risk assessment.
If you are keeping the questions in the copyright section above your answers (this is fine) please can you put them in bold to separate them out from your answers a bit.
    Thanks
    Nora
